Can You Change Your Extension Colour?
Wonder what happens if you want to change your colour when the seasons — or your mood, or your relationship status… (been there) — change, but you have extensions in?
It’s an honest question, and one we get asked a lot. Some clients have assumed they can’t colour their hair at all once extensions are in. The truth is much less complicated than you’d think — and you have a few different options for switching up your colour.
This is a favourite move for clients who like to go brighter and blonder in the summer, then settle into something darker and softer for the cooler months. There are generally three ways to make that seasonal switch.
1. Toning Your Existing Wefts
Your stylist can custom tone your current wefts to shift their overall tone — adding warmth for fall, or cooling things down for winter — without needing a brand new set. It’s the simplest refresh, and it works with the hair you already have.
Here’s the catch though: this option only goes darker, not lighter. Now, can you technically lighten your existing wefts? Sure — you can do whatever you want. But you’ll likely torch the life of your extensions if you try. Because of how they’re chemically processed during production, wefts just don’t take to lightening well. If you’re craving a brighter, blonder shift, that’s where blending in new wefts or swapping to a lighter set (options 2 and 3 below) comes in.
2. Blending In a Few New Wefts
Rather than replacing your whole set, you can swap in a few new wefts for a seasonal accent shade during a re-install appointment. This is a lower-commitment way to shift your look — a handful of darker or lighter pieces woven through for the season, without colouring your entire set.
3. Swapping to a New Set Entirely
Some clients keep two sets on rotation — a lighter, sun-kissed set for spring and summer, and a deeper set for fall and winter — simply swapping which set is installed at their re-install appointments. This is the most flexible option if you love dramatic seasonal shifts, though it does mean investing in a second set of wefts upfront.
Extension Colour Care Note: Whichever route you choose, please never bleach, or colour your wefts at home. Always have toning or colour adjustments done by a professional who works with extensions specifically — the techniques and products differ from colouring your natural hair.
Putting It on a Calendar
A simple way to think about your maintenance rhythm:
Every 4–6 weeks: Move-up appointment
2–4 times a year: Seasonal colour refresh, timed around your re-install appointments so you’re not paying for two separate visits
Staying on this rhythm keeps your wefts looking seamless year-round, and turns seasonal colour changes into a simple add-on to a visit you were already booking — not a whole new project.
